1

Start with a circle and oval like this.
2

Add eyes on this line.
3

Add an oval for a nose and the letter U twice
for a smile.
4

Another letter U makes a great dog
tongue!
5

Ovals make great ears.
6

Two circles drawn like this start the
body.
(Draw the circle closest to the head so that that it is behind the
tongue like this.)
That's right - the technique is OVERLAPPING.
7

Connect the two circles with curved lines.
Add a line to show where the neck goes.
8

Add legs with slightly curved lines for legs
and ovals for feet.
9

Add legs with slightly curved lines for legs
and ovals for feet and you're done with the pencil
drawing.
10

Add a background and props to finish the
scene. Trace the lines you want to keep with a black felt tip or ball
point pen and then erase ALL of the pencil lines. The next step is up
to you. Color your dog with colored pencil, marker or crayons for a
classy finish!

After years of struggling to figure out how to draw hands and feet, Duane Barnhart Comes out with Cartooning Basics and makes it all look easy! ...Cartooning Basics is an entertaining read and a wonderful how-to for the beginning cartoonist or for anyone who wants to improve their drawing skills. ...What are you waiting for? Grab your paper and pencil and start having some fun? Jim Davis, creator of Garfield KIDS LOVE TO DRAW CARTOONS! This new, expanded edition of Cartooning Basics makes it easier than ever for kids and beginners to find cartooning success!
Schools faced with budget problems continue to drop art programs and most certainly do not support the art form kids love best&endash;cartooning. Professional cartoonist and teacher, Duane Barnhart filled this cultural gap with Cartooning Basics in 1997 and the book became a hit with kids, teachers and home schools. Now, in this fourth edition, he has revised Cartooning Basics to include even more cartooning instruction geared for kids ages seven to teenagers.
Barnhart has filled each page with simple and easy to follow step-by-step lessons containing plenty of examples and ideas. He helps beginners pace their success with pencil icons indicating difficulty level. This new edition goes much farther by including two ways to draw successful, active body poses, more expression ideas, many more characters, perspective drawing, background, cartoon strip instruction, animation and even a page on how to get ideas. Flip the corners of the book to see your 'cartoon guide', the Number Two pencil, have some animated fun!
