Goodbye to a friend

When I awoke on the 13th of February I was expecting to be sad because of the final printing of the last Peanuts comic strip, but I wasn't expecting to hear about the death of Charles Schulz. Schulz was teacher as well as a master cartoonist. Early in his career, he held a job as a teacher at the Art Instruction Schools, but his real teaching came in the way he constantly encouraged others to pursue their dreams in cartooning. Cartoonists around the world swap stories about how Sparky (Schulz' nickname) would call or write with encouragement and ideas about how to succeed in the competitive world of comics. Our mentor is no longer there.

He touched my life with his support of my teaching and my publishing of Cartooning Basics. He could have done nothing, or perhaps sent me a note or made an encouraging phone call, but he took the time to write the forword to my book. He gave me encouragement in my writing and my teaching. I always will be grateful for his kindness and consideration.

Words can't express the emptyness now in the cartooning community. We will all miss Snoopy, Charlie Brown, and the rest of the Peanuts gang, but most of all, we'll miss the the master cartoonist, our friend and mentor, Sparky.

Thank you, Sparky for devoting your life to cartooning.
